When Pirate Patches Hurt October 19, 2008
Another month, and another trip to the doctors. The S in our HSA plan is seeming more like Spending than Savings. After attending a very nice pirate themed birthday party, C & T came home with goodie-bags complete with their own pirate, black, eye patches. “errrrghhh matey,” C exclaimed as he settled into the couch.
A sat down with the little pirates for some decompression time, as I started to make dinner, when we heard the most blood-curdling scream you can imagine.
I ran into the living room to see A trying to assess what had just happened.
C was curled up on the couch screaming as he gripped his right eye.
Apparently, he had pulled the patch as far from his eye as he could while keeping the elastic band wrapped about his head. as he was wide-eying it, the patch SNAPPED back and hit him dead in the eye!
We called the doctor, who in turn redirected us to the Childrens’ ER.
He had a corneal abrasion. Though “thank God” after a trip to the pediatric opthamologist the next day, we learned he would be A-ok.
Who could have thought an eye patch could be so dangerous?
